On Saturday, July 11, History San Jose was pleased to participate in the 2nd Annual Silicon Valley S.T.E.A.M. Festival at the Reid-Hillview Airport in San Jose. As an event exhibitor, we offered visitors a glimpse into the not-so-distant past with a typewriter, rotary phone, adding machine, and Brownie camera from our Education Collection. Items from our Education Collection can be touched by visitors for an immersive, hands-on experience.
While many of us familiar with the uses of these everyday objects, many young children today are now a generation or two removed from seeing these objects in use. Parents had the opportunity to explain to their children about the object, the purpose it served, and exactly how the objects work. Many of our younger visitors were astonished to see how their parents and grandparents used to make phone calls, write letters, and take photos. We love providing the opportunity to facilitate discussion among families in our community!
Hundreds of people stopped by to check out our table, pick up our event calendars, and hear about our upcoming San Jose Mini Maker Faire (Sept 6).
Special thanks to the organizers of the S.T.E.A.M. Festival for the kind invitation to participate! We will look forward to being involved again next year.
