 Collections

History San José (HSJ) manages one of the largest regional history collections in the State of California. The region is geographically defined as the Santa Clara Valley, and “virtually” defined as Silicon Valley. The ultimate goal of preserving this collection is to share it with the broadest possible community. Three main categories comprise the permanent collection: 1) artifacts, 2) research, and 3) historic and reconstructed buildings.

The collection is managed by the Collections and Exhibitions Department in accordance with the History San José Collection Management Policy, and with the guidance of the HSJ Collection Committee and Board of Directors.

The Department’s staff, volunteers, and interns are actively managing the collection, and developing plans and policies as outlined in the contract between History San José and the City of San José Collecting Plan, Deaccession Policy, and Conservation Plan. All of the Department’s activities are carried out with the ultimate goal of making the collections more publicly accessible.
