 School Programs: Grade 5

History Park Tour
Classes are divided into groups for docent-led tours of select buildings in History Park. These tours provide snapshot views of different lifestyles and occupations in Santa Clara Valley's history. All students will not visit the same buildings.

School Days in the 1890's
Standards: LA Reading 1.1; Listening & Speaking 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.6
Students spend the morning in a restored one-room schoolhouse being taught as if they were attending in the 1890s. They figure a problem, practice their penmanship and read a page in the McGuffey Reader. At recess, they play "Mother May I" and other schoolyard games.

Westward Ho!
Standards: SS 5.8.1, 5.8.2, 5.8.4; LA Reading 2.1; Listening & Speaking 1.1, 1.2, 1.3; Science 4C
Students form wagon companies to traverse the famous Overland Trail. They plot their routes West on a map and strategize for the perils of this rough trip. They will purchase a wagon and load it with supplies for survival. At the resting-up camp, they churn butter, make pioneer sweets and see who is best at rolling hoops. Note: This guided program requires chaperone participation (training provided).
