Experience Victorian Days

Students learn about daily life in 19th-century Santa Clara Valley by doing and comparing. They bake scones, perform the duties of the butler and laundress, pose for photos in Victorian garments, play parlor games and make a toy to take home.
People at Work

Taking on the roles of various workers, students will visit three different workplaces to learn about occupations in the Santa Clara Valley in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, how these businesses supported agricultural communities, and how they contributed to the growth of the region. Buildings may include the Doctors' Office, Bank of Italy, Print Shop, Stables, or Ng Shing Gung Museum.
Valley of Heart's Delight
Standards: SS 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.3.1, 3.3.2, 3.3.3, 3.5.1; LA Listening & Speaking 1.1, 1.2, 1.3; Math MG 1.1, MR 1.1; Science 5C, 5D, 5E
Students explore the agricultural history of the Santa Clara Valley by visiting the Stevens Ranch Fruit Barn. They'll learn about regional geography, ag labor and technology, land use and the canning industry. Activities include weighing fruit, designing a crate/can label, and viewing migrant farm worker houses.
Victorian Family Life
Standards: SS 3.3.3; LA Listening & Speaking 1.1, 1.2, 1.3
Docents visit your classroom to lead your students in discovering the daily life of a child during the 1880s. Touchable objects relate to
school, play and daily tasks.
